Mini Cooper: fun to be green
The newest Mini Coopers represent the greenest fun you can have on the road. Retaining all the character and charm of the Italian Job original, the newest Minis combine power with green credentials.
The 1.6-litre four-cylinder BMW-engineered engine uses variable valve management (naturally aspirated in the standard model or with a twin-scroll turbocharger in the high-performance Mini Cooper S). Whilst the engine cracks out 118 horsepower and 114 lbs-ft of torque, it still offers a highly impressive fuel economy rate of 37 mpg.
Customers looking for a more powerful drive should consider the Mini Cooper S. The twin scroll turbo delivers 172 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 177 lbs-ft of torque. The Mini Cooper S is as green as its less powerful stablemates, offering a highly impressive 40 mpg, with a 37.8 mpg from its 13.2 gallon fuel tank.
What makes the Mini Cooper so fuel efficient? Apart from its efficient size (its cool to be small), the Mini uses an alternator disconnect that runs the alternator only during braking and deceleration. The vehicle also features a new Auto Start Stop function which shuts down the engine when manual transmission is shifted into neutral. The engine automatically restarts when the car is put back into gear.
